There are basically 2 (two) types of printer cartridges, the OEM's or original cartridges and there is the non-original cartridges also known as non-genuine. Non-original cartridges can be break down into types, the remanufactured cartridge and the other one is called compatible cartridge.

Cartridges that works the same way as the originals are what we called compatibles. Without tampering the products trademark and breaking copyrights, these compatible cartridges are manufactured  the same as how their original counterparts are made. The advantage of using these products is simply to save money which at times gives consumer about 30-40% savings on their total expense. The draw back of this cartridges is they're not totally environmentally manufactured, there are also some occasional failures and customer complains about the product.

On the other hand, remanufactured cartridges are quite different from compatibles as they're considered as recycled cartridges or eco-friendly toner cartridge and ink cartridge. Remanufactured cartridges are made from used and empty cartridges that consumers return to their respective manufacturer for the product recycling process. Returned cartridges are then thoroughly clean, refurbish and filled with sufficient ink and toner plenty enough for each cartridges. You also get much savings from remanufactured cartridges as compared to compatible cartridges. But considering that these products are environment friendly, by purchasing recycled products you are participating in the close loop cycle of nature preservation.

Always keep in mind that whenever you purchase or if you will ever try to purchase remanufactured toner cartridge and ink cartridge, check and read carefully the labels of the pack at all times. This is to ensure that you won't get to buy the inappropriate ink or toner cartridge for your printer, as the packaged may look completely different cause recycled products such as these remanufactured cartridges doesn't always come in extravagant packaging unlike those original cartridges who are always in those glossy packs. Remember that it's not the box that you're buying but the product inside of it, be thankful you're not paying for the fancy packaging that name brands charge you.

There might be occasional failures that you'll encounter both with compatible and remanufactured cartridges, but these failure are within industry norms that you'll experience even with original cartridges. It should be important to know that your retailer has company policies not only for the products failure but also to the damage that it may bring to the consumers equipment.
